HEALTHCARE CONSTRUCTION

Expanding care capacity while keeping the project practical, buildable, and on schedule.

Gerber Construction completed a major expansion of the Family Health Care facility in Big Rapids, transforming a smaller existing building into a larger, more functional healthcare environment.

The project expanded the facility from approximately 3,000 square feet to roughly 12,000 square feet, adding space for clinical care, dental services, improved patient flow, and updated interior finishes.

CHALLENGE

Site conditions required a shift in plans .

The original concept included below-grade space, but site conditions and water table concerns made that approach less practical and more costly.

APPROACH

Adapt the design without losing function.

The team worked through the conditions and shifted square footage to the main level, improving usability while reducing unnecessary risk.

RESULT

A larger, more efficient medical facility.

The completed expansion created a stronger healthcare environment with additional treatment space, improved circulation, and upgraded finishes.

Built through coordination, flexibility, and self-performance.

Gerber served as general contractor and self-performed a significant portion of the work, including site work, excavation, concrete, framing, siding, and interior finishes. This gave the team more direct control over schedule, sequencing, and quality throughout the project.

Long-standing subcontractor relationships also helped keep the project moving. With electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and roofing partners coordinated alongside Gerber’s own crews, the team was able to maintain momentum and respond quickly as field conditions evolved.

The project reflects Gerber’s practical construction approach: evaluate the conditions, adjust the plan when needed, and keep the client’s operational needs at the center of the work.
