Since 1957, Gerber Construction has grown through three generations of family leadership, built on hard work, integrity, craftsmanship, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
From Russell Gerber's early construction projects in Reed City to the continued growth of the company today, each generation has carried forward the same values while expanding the company's capabilities, relationships, and impact across Michigan.
Russell Gerber — Founder
Gerber Construction was founded in 1957 by Russell Gerber, a man whose life and work were defined by perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
Raised on a farm in Reed City, Michigan, Russ developed a strong work ethic at an early age alongside his five siblings. He attended Reed City High School, where he participated in football and track, often walking miles to practice. After high school, he attended Michigan State University before being drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he served honorably as a Sergeant. In 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Avis.
In 1957, while working at Miller Industries, Russ partnered with builder Hank Kailing and began taking on small construction projects. Under Hank’s mentorship, he developed the craftsmanship and accountability that became the foundation of Gerber Construction.
The company grew steadily into both residential and commercial construction, with a key milestone in the early 1970s through work at the Reed City Milk and Cheese facility (later Yoplait). During difficult economic times, Russ demonstrated unwavering integrity by personally repaying debts—remortgaging his home to ensure every obligation was met.
He built a loyal workforce by treating employees with respect and offering progressive benefits well ahead of industry norms. Deeply involved in the community, Russ served in leadership roles with home builders associations, the Reed City Board of Education, Eagle Village, and as a volunteer firefighter—leaving a lasting legacy in both business and community.
Terry Gerber — Second Generation
Terry Gerber was born and raised in Reed City, Michigan, and grew up in a large family with five siblings, where strong values and a disciplined work ethic were part of everyday life. He began working on his grandfather Ernest Gerber’s farm at age 10 and joined his father on job sites by 13, learning the business from the ground up.
After high school, he pursued college and Navy ROTC with plans to become an engineer, but ultimately returned home to continue the family business. Mentored by Russ and long-time team members, Terry developed both the technical expertise and leadership approach that would guide the company forward.
In the early 2000s, Terry assumed leadership of Gerber Construction and later purchased his father’s interest. As he grew the business, he was known for his dedication—working long hours, weekends, and holidays to ensure projects were completed to the highest standard.
Under his leadership, the company expanded while maintaining its core values of quality workmanship, strong client relationships, and employee care. Terry also remained deeply involved in the community, serving as township supervisor and supporting local schools and organizations.
He retired in December 2014, selling the company to his daughter and son-in-law, Bill and Jill Terryn, ensuring the continuation of the family legacy into its third generation. In retirement, he continues to stay active on his farm, assisting friends and family with projects, and serving on the Lake Osceola State Bank Board, the Richmond Township Planning Commission, and the Richmond Township DDA.
Bill Terryn — Third Generation
Today, the third generation carries Gerber Construction forward. Bill Terryn leads day-to-day operations, continuing the tradition of hands-on leadership, disciplined growth, and a strong commitment to quality craftsmanship.
Raised on a farm in Reed City, Bill developed a strong work ethic early through agriculture, 4-H, and rodeo. During high school, he balanced academics, athletics—earning recognition as a state medalist in wrestling—and consistent work experience, building the foundation for his leadership style today.
After high school, Bill began his career in the plumbers union, gaining valuable hands-on experience across a wide range of construction projects throughout Michigan. He later transitioned into residential construction and joined Gerber Construction in 2007. Through years of dedication, he advanced within the company—leading crews, managing increasingly complex projects, and developing a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of the business.
Since taking ownership, Bill has focused on strengthening operations, expanding capabilities, and positioning the company for long-term growth. He has successfully integrated additional services through the acquisition and development of Quality Concrete and Nate Green Trucking. Allowing Gerber Construction to provide more complete, efficient project delivery while maintaining its reputation for quality and reliability.
Bill’s leadership reflects a balance of tradition and progress—honoring the company’s longstanding values while continuing to evolve with the industry. His hands-on approach, attention to detail, and commitment to doing the job right remain consistent with the standards established since 1957.
Bill and Jill have two daughters, and their youngest, Malley Terryn, is part of the family legacy, contributing in the office. Together, they continue to carry forward the values of hard work, integrity, and pride in craftsmanship into the next generation.
